Dear You,
A few days ago, I had the privilege of meeting again the man who sexually assaulted me when I was an adolescent. What it revealed was so interesting that I’ll share it with you.
He showed up at a family party (yes, most sexual assaults happen within families). He seemed very troubled. His face looked gray, he wore black clothes, was very obese, and seemed to have lost the arrogance that was so characteristic in the old days.
Something drew me to him. Looking back, I can only conclude that he was ready to meet me, because I have the tendency to lead the way to someone’s true self.
So, I sat next to him, and he spoke openly about losing his job, replaced by a young, cheaper woman. He talked about his wandering and how he struggled to find who he was, and how he lost his interest in the army that had always driven him.
I saw a soul that finally wanted to be himself! And it pleased me so deeply. It also revealed that pain is often (not always) needed to come to this point. I had my pain very young and gained a lot of life experience at an early age. He seemed to be just beginning that journey. And I could only have empathy for him. I gave him a few pearls to ponder and left with regained strength.
The soft had won over the hard. And now real bravery had won over him. How beautiful.
As a child, I had always known that he was scarred by his father, and that helped me understand why he took advantage of my innocence. Looking at him now made me feel so strong. Realizing that I had the courage to face my pain and fear made me so much stronger than he was at that time. It was an intense moment of “well done” that I felt from the universe.
Humbly, I thank you, oh grace, for the opportunity to notice that not one negative emotion arose during this meeting and that I had done my inner work perfectly.
I’m so grateful to bring all my insights about emotions to the world, because healing from trauma is possible!
