Ever wondered why one person always seems happy, or at least steady, while another is constantly wrestling with negative emotions?
I’ve got a little anecdote that explains one piece of that puzzle…
A few days ago, I walked on the beach with a friend. Barefoot through the water. For as long as it took to clear my head. Or, better put, to transform puzzling thoughts into inspiring new ideas. And of course, to sink into the body and celebrate a warm connection.
Anyway, that’s not what this anecdote is about 😉
While walking for hours along an abandoned beach, we stumbled upon a little girl standing behind two buckets full of jellyfish. I was in awe of their beauty and expressed that with wide eyes and a loud “Wow!” while looking into the buckets, seeing at least twenty of them.
As we walked further, I shared my tender feelings about the girl with my friend:
“How sweet that she was rescuing them from the dry land.”
To which he dryly responded: “No, they were catching them from the sea. Now they’re suffocating in those buckets. It was harsh what she did!”
And he added an extra layer by saying: “The world is full of wicked people.”
So, here it comes…
What emotions do you think we each experienced while passing that girl?
Right—I had the positive ones, he the negative. 😉
Okay, fair enough, you could say he’s a realist and I’m a dreamer.
But in another situation, those roles might have been reversed—because of personal triggers.
Emotions reveal who has something to ‘work on’.
I laughed at him and said:
“Well, I choose to believe in the goodness of humankind, so I’ll have positive reflections.”
